General Information

The objective of the Traditional Boat Squadron is to foster the use, construction, restoration and public display of traditional boats and items associated therewith.

Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in traditional boats. Full membership, with its associated voting rights, is $50 per annum. Associate membership, which carries no voting rights, is open to individuals who don’t participate to any great extent in squadron activities, but have an interest in being on our contact list – it costs $12 per annum. Membership is for the current financial year.

The Squadron’s activities are mainly centred on the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding region. The TBSA is incorporated in the ACT.

Its members have interests in tradition boats of all types and classes, propelled by sail, oar, internal combustion engine, electricity or steam.

TBSA sailing days are generally scheduled on the third Sunday of each month, although this may be subject to change to fit in with member commitments and other events within the region.

Meetings of the TBSA are held every month on the Monday prior to a sailing day. Meetings are currently held in the Members' Lounge of the National Museum of Australia at 8.00pm.

Generally it is not possible for a private party to obtain permission to operate a power boat (other than electrically powered) on Lake Burley Griffin. However, the TBSA’s constitution contains the squadron’s rules for eligibility of a traditional boat. A power boat belonging to a TBSA member that satisfies these rules, and also satisfies the safety regulations of the National Capital Authority (NCA), is eligible for the issue of a permit to operate on Lake Burley Griffin.
